Clydesdale Western 1st XI began their Women’s Indoor National Division One season off with two wins on Sunday at Bell’s Sports Centre.
After finishing as runners up in the 2018-19 campaign, the L1s would have been keen going into the new season with the ambition to go one further this time round – as they did in 2017-18.
Wendy Justice’s side started with a 5-2 win over Hillhead 1s, as braces from Bronywn Shields and Jen Eadie sent them on their way to three points. Millie Steiger got ‘Dale Western’s other goal.
In the second game of the day, Eadie added another three goals to her tally, helping the Titwood girls achieve a 6-4 victory against Grove Menzieshill 1s. Steiger also added two goals in the same game, whilst Shields grabbed one to the aid of Clydesdale Western.
At Dundee International Sports Centre (DISC), Clydesdale Western 2s took three points in their opening weekend of Women’s Indoor National Division Two.
Lucy Arnold’s goal against Bon Accord in the L2s first game was enough to give them a 1-0 win.
A loss followed in their second and final game to Western Wildcats 1s, who will arguably be favourites for promotion this season. Claire MacDonald got on the scoresheet but sadly saw her side go down 3-1 at DISC.
Clydesdale Men’s 1s had a tricky start to their opening games in Men’s Indoor National Division One at Bell’s Sports Centre on Saturday.
In their opening game against Dundee Wanderers 1s, a goal each from Andrew Allan and Ciaran Crawford gave the M1s a 2-1 lead, pulling back a one goal deficit. But Wanderers equalised late in the first half before scoring the winner midway through the second half to condemn Neil Mitchell’s side to an opening game loss.
A goal each from Chris McFadden and Ben Galloway in their second game against Grange restored a level scoreline, having gone two down early in the first half. Allan scored a second goal of the day towards the final knockings of the game, but the Edinburgh side responded not long after to take a share of the points.
It was a woeful West District weekend for our Clydesdale & Clydesdale Western teams in the five fixtures that took place – which has now signalled the beginning of the winter break.
Clydesdale Men’s 4s suffered the heaviest defeat of the weekend, losing 10-0 at home to GHK 1s in Men’s West District Division Two on Saturday. The M4s sit 11th in the league table going into the winter break.
Clydesdale Men’s 5s did not fare much better on Saturday too, losing 7-0 at home to Ayr 2s in Men’s West District Division Three South, which leaves them 6th in the standings.
In what was billed as Clydesdale & Clydesdale Western’s fixture of the weekend, the L4s had an afternoon to forget in their top of the table clash in Women’s West District Division One with Rottenrow 1s at Glasgow Green. Despite having a depleted squad, the L4s surrendered top spot after losing 6-0 at Glasgow Green.
The L5s lost both of their games this weekend. A ten player squad on Saturday went down 2-0 in Women’s West District Division Two away to Stewarton Garnock 1s. A slightly stronger squad had little luck on Sunday, as the L5s succumbed to a 4-1 loss at home to GHK 3s. Christine Pender was the weekend’s only outdoor goalscorer, as her side now sit 8th in the league table.
