Post: ‘Dale retain NL1 Indoor status despite loss – Weekend Review – 27th/28th January

Three wins for our Ladies outdoor teams whilst our Men’s concluded their indoor seasons.

M1s 2-5 Grove Menzieshill; M1s 4-6 Grange 1s

Clydesdale Men’s 1st XI’s defeat to Grove Menzieshill rendered meaningless as they retained their National Indoor League Division One status for next season after Edinburgh University were beaten by Dundee Wanderers at Bell’s Sports Centre.

The M1s lost out 5-2 to the Dundee side in the day’s opening game in Perth.  Chris McFadden scored two consolation goals in the final three minutes after Menzieshill had held a led by five.  But Uni’s 4-0 loss to Dundee Wanderers meant Clydesdale finished 3rd in Pool A, meaning they would play 3rd of Pool B as 5th/6th playoff, which would be Grange, in their final game of the day and the season.

A hat-trick from Chris McFadden and a goal from Aidan Black was sadly not enough as Clydesdale were beaten 6-4 by their Edinburgh opponents.  The result concludes the Indoor season for the Men’s 1st XI with the boys finishing 6th.

M2s 2-2 Western Wildcats; M2s 3-2 Grange 2s; M2s 8-3 Hillhead 2s

Clydesdale Men’s 2s secured a 2nd place finish in the Men’s Regional Indoor League as they followed up a draw against Western Wildcats 2s with wins against Grange 2s and Hillhead 2s at Forthbank.

Seven points were required for the 2s to finish 2nd in the Regional League after Watsonians 2s had clinched top spot the week before.  The M2s only actually had four outfield players and a goalkeeper for their game against Wildcats which ended with an equal share of the points.  However, the arrivals of older statesmen Ali Bleach and Spencer Cox helped the 2s to a narrow 3-2 win over Grange 2s before a dominating performance against Hillhead 2s saw them run out 8-3 winners.

L4s 2-1 GHK 2s (S Lonergan, E Murray)

Clydesdale Western 4s continued their rise up the Women’s West District Division One table after a hard fought away win against GHK 2s at Old Anniesland.

Sarah Lonergan’s opener was cancelled out by GHK 2’s equaliser.  But the L4s picked up the three points thanks to a Ellen Murray’s excellent winner.  The win takes the L4s up to 7th in WWD Division One table, two points clear of safety whilst closing the gap on the teams above them.

L5s 6-0 Ayr 2s (K Meikle (2); L Anderson (2); L Halley, A Lonergan); Sunday – L5s 2-1 Stepps (L Arnold, S Lonergan)

Clydesdale Western 5s claimed back to back weekend wins over Ayr 2s and Stepps 2s in their bid for promotion back to Women’s West District Two.

The L5s romped to a 6-0 win over Ayr 2s at Titwood – with all six goals coming in a sensational first half display.  There were doubles from Katrina Meikle and Lucy Anderson whilst Lauren Halley and Annie Lonergan scored a goal each.

Trish Lonergan’s team had a more difficult game on Sunday but still overcame Stepps 2s 2-1.  Lucy Arnold and Sarah Lonergan were the goalscorers for the L5s.

The wins take Clydesdale Western 5s up to 3rd in the Women’s West District Division Three table, two points behind 2nd place GHK 3s with a game in hand.

Well done to all of our teams this weekend for their efforts!
